# AT&T Email to Text Shutdown — What Happened and What to Use Now

AT&T permanently shut down its email-to-text gateway on June 17, 2025, so emails sent to @txt.att.net (SMS) and @mms.att.net (MMS) no longer reach phones. To keep texting from email, you now need a [registered 10DLC business sender](https://textbolt.com/blog/10dlc-compliance/). The simplest drop-in replacement is TextBolt: email 1234567890@sendemailtotext.com and it delivers as a normal text.

Status:

AT&T email-to-text gateway permanently shut down June 17, 2025 — `@txt.att.net` and `@mms.att.net` no longer deliver.

**On a different carrier?** Verizon → [Verizon migration](https://textbolt.com/migration/verizon/) · T-Mobile → [T-Mobile migration](https://textbolt.com/migration/tmobile2/) · WIN-911 alarms → [WIN-911 migration](https://textbolt.com/migration/win-911/).

⚠️ CRITICAL NOTICE

The Email to Text AT&T Service Permanently Ended June 17, 2025

All emails sent to @txt.att.net and @mms.att.net will stop working completely, which is why many users are already reporting txt.att.net not working.

No grace period. No extensions. Your messaging capability will simply disappear.

## What Happened to AT&T Email-to-Text?

AT&T permanently ended its free email-to-text (and text-to-email) gateway on **June 17, 2025**. Any email sent to `number@txt.att.net` (for SMS) or `number@mms.att.net` (for MMS) now bounces or silently disappears — which is why people searching “txt.att.net not working” or “att mms not working” get no delivery. There is no grace period and no extension. Cricket Wireless (an AT&T brand) shut its gateway down too, and Verizon and T-Mobile are restricting or ending theirs as well.

This is not a temporary outage you can fix by restarting your phone. The gateway itself was switched off, so the only fix is to send your texts a different way.

## Why is AT&T Shutting Down Email-to-Text?

AT&T quietly announced this shutdown with minimal public notification, leaving millions scrambling for alternatives. Here’s why they’re pulling the plug:

<svg class="lucide lucide-shield w-8 h-8 text-red-600" fill="none" height="24" stroke="currentColor" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" stroke-width="2" viewbox="0 0 24 24" width="24" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg"><path d="M20 13c0 5-3.5 7.5-7.66 8.95a1 1 0 0 1-.67-.01C7.5 20.5 4 18 4 13V6a1 1 0 0 1 1-1c2 0 4.5-1.2 6.24-2.72a1.17 1.17 0 0 1 1.52 0C14.51 3.81 17 5 19 5a1 1 0 0 1 1 1z"></path></svg>

### 1. 10DLC Compliance Is Now the Law for Business Texting

Since 2023, U.S. carriers require every application-to-person (A2P) business text — anything sent by software, a CRM, a monitoring tool, or a templated message — to go through a registered **10DLC** sender (10-digit long code registered with The Campaign Registry). Separately, the **TCPA** (Telephone Consumer Protection Act) is the U.S. law that requires you have the recipient’s prior consent before sending automated texts; 10DLC is the carrier-side registration that proves a real, identifiable business is behind that traffic. Free email gateways can’t verify who the sender is, so they were never 10DLC-compliant. Carriers face penalties for non-compliant traffic, so they shut the gateways off.

<svg class="lucide lucide-triangle-alert w-8 h-8 text-orange-600" fill="none" height="24" stroke="currentColor" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" stroke-width="2" viewbox="0 0 24 24" width="24" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg"><path d="m21.73 18-8-14a2 2 0 0 0-3.48 0l-8 14A2 2 0 0 0 4 21h16a2 2 0 0 0 1.73-3"></path><path d="M12 9v4"></path><path d="M12 17h.01"></path></svg>

### 2. Security and Spam

Anyone could send to `@txt.att.net` from any email address, which made it an easy channel for spam and SMS phishing (“smishing”). With no sender authentication, carriers carried the liability.

<svg class="lucide lucide-settings w-8 h-8 text-blue-600" fill="none" height="24" stroke="currentColor" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" stroke-width="2" viewbox="0 0 24 24" width="24" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg"><path d="M12.22 2h-.44a2 2 0 0 0-2 2v.18a2 2 0 0 1-1 1.73l-.43.25a2 2 0 0 1-2 0l-.15-.08a2 2 0 0 0-2.73.73l-.22.38a2 2 0 0 0 .73 2.73l.15.1a2 2 0 0 1 1 1.72v.51a2 2 0 0 1-1 1.74l-.15.09a2 2 0 0 0-.73 2.73l.22.38a2 2 0 0 0 2.73.73l.15-.08a2 2 0 0 1 2 0l.43.25a2 2 0 0 1 1 1.73V20a2 2 0 0 0 2 2h.44a2 2 0 0 0 2-2v-.18a2 2 0 0 1 1-1.73l.43-.25a2 2 0 0 1 2 0l.15.08a2 2 0 0 0 2.73-.73l.22-.39a2 2 0 0 0-.73-2.73l-.15-.08a2 2 0 0 1-1-1.74v-.5a2 2 0 0 1 1-1.74l.15-.09a2 2 0 0 0 .73-2.73l-.22-.38a2 2 0 0 0-2.73-.73l-.15.08a2 2 0 0 1-2 0l-.43-.25a2 2 0 0 1-1-1.73V4a2 2 0 0 0-2-2z"></path><circle cx="12" cy="12" r="3"></circle></svg>

### 3. Old Technology

The gateway is 20-plus-year-old infrastructure AT&T would rather not maintain while it invests in modern messaging and 5G.

<svg class="lucide lucide-trending-down w-8 h-8 text-purple-600" fill="none" height="24" stroke="currentColor" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" stroke-width="2" viewbox="0 0 24 24" width="24" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg"><polyline points="22 17 13.5 8.5 8.5 13.5 2 7"></polyline><polyline points="16 17 22 17 22 11"></polyline></svg>

### 4. Industry-Wide Movement

This isn’t only AT&T. Verizon’s @vtext.com / @vzwpix.com gateway is being phased out (full shutdown expected March 31, 2027), and T-Mobile’s @tmomail.net is increasingly unreliable. If your alarms or alerts run through WIN-911, see the WIN-911 fix.

## How Does Sending a Text to an Email Address Work?

There are three plain ways to bridge text and email. Here is the neutral how-to, then the compliant business option.

### Method 1 — From Your Phone (Native, Person-to-Person).

This still works for casual, low-volume personal messages:

- Open your phone’s messaging app (Google Messages on Android, the Messages app on iPhone).
- Start a new message.
- In the To field, type the full email address instead of a phone number (for example someone@example.com).
- Type your message and send. The recipient gets it as an email; their reply comes back as a text.

This is fine for a one-off personal message. It is **not** a business solution: there’s no delivery tracking, no shared team access, and it isn’t 10DLC-registered, so business or automated volume gets throttled or blocked.

### Method 2 — The Carrier Gateway Address (Now Shut Down on AT&T)

The old way to email a text was to send to `number@carrier-gateway`. For AT&T that was `5551234567@txt.att.net` for SMS and `5551234567@mms.att.net` for MMS. **As of June 17, 2025 the AT&T gateway is off, so this no longer works**, and it was never 10DLC-compliant for business use anyway. The carrier-gateway table below shows the status for each carrier.

### Method 3 — A Compliant Email-to-Text Service (Recommended for Any Business or Automated Use)

This is the working replacement. You send a normal email to a service address and it delivers a real, 10DLC-compliant text. With TextBolt the address format is: **Worked example**: to text the number 123-456-7890, send your email to 1234567890@sendemailtotext.com. The subject/body becomes the text; replies come back into your inbox.

It works the same from Gmail, Outlook, Apple Mail, or any monitoring tool that can send email. Keep your message under 160 characters for a single SMS segment.

## Carrier Email-to-Text Gateway Addresses (and Their Status)

These are the old free carrier gateway formats. Most are shut down or unreliable. The TextBolt row is the one that works on every carrier today.

| Carrier | SMS Gateway | MMS Gateway | Status | Switch To |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AT&T | number@txt.att.net | number@mms.att.net | Shut down June 17, 2025 | You’re on this page — switch to TextBolt below |
| Verizon | number@vtext.com | number@vzwpix.com | Phasing out, full shutdown by March 31, 2027 | Verizon migration |
| T-Mobile | number@tmomail.net | number@tmomail.net | Restricted / unreliable | T-Mobile migration |
| TextBolt | number@sendemailtotext.com | number@sendemailtotext.com | Active — works on every carrier, 10DLC-compliant | Start now |

## Who is Affected by the AT&T Shutdown?

Every business that relied on `@txt.att.net` for automated text delivery is now asking why their AT&T email-to-text isn’t working. The answer is the same across industries: the gateway is off. The teams feeling it hardest:

## Migration FAQ

**What exactly shut down with AT&T email to text?**

AT&T permanently discontinued its email-to-text gateways: `@txt.att.net` for SMS and `@mms.att.net` for MMS. After June 17, 2025, any email sent to those addresses bounces or disappears.

**How do I text an email address from my phone?**

On Android (Google Messages) or iPhone (Messages), create a new conversation and enter the email address in the To field, then send. It’s fine for personal one-off messages but has no delivery tracking and isn’t 10DLC-registered for business use.

**How quickly can I migrate from AT&T email to text?**

Setup takes about 30 minutes. Carrier verification for 10DLC typically takes 24–48 hours, so start early.

**Do I need any technical knowledge to use TextBolt?**

No. If you can send an email, you can use TextBolt. You install from Google Workspace Marketplace and change your recipient addresses from `@txt.att.net` to `@sendemailtotext.com`.

**Is TextBolt compliant with messaging regulations?**

Yes. TextBolt is fully 10DLC compliant, which U.S. carriers now require for all business texting. Compliance also improves delivery and keeps messages out of spam filters.

**I’m on Verizon or T-Mobile, not AT&T what do I do?**

Verizon’s gateway (`@vtext.com` / `@vzwpix.com`) is being phased out (full shutdown expected March 31, 2027) and T-Mobile’s `@tmomail.net` is increasingly unreliable. TextBolt works across all carriers, so you only migrate once.

**Can I keep using my existing phone numbers?**

Yes. You send to the recipient’s phone number, and messages go out from a professional toll-free or 10DLC number on your account, which improves trust and deliverability.

**What’s included in TextBolt pricing?**

[Transparent pricing](https://textbolt.com/pricing/) starting at $29/month for 500 messages *[verify]*. All plans include 10DLC compliance, delivery tracking, priority support, and a professional sending number.

**Can multiple team members use the same account?**

Yes. TextBolt supports multiple users sending from one account — good for teams, departments, or whole organizations.

**How does the free trial work?**

After business verification (24–48 hours), you get a 7-day free trial with 10 credits to test delivery. A credit card is required to prevent spam, but you aren’t charged until the trial ends.

**What about HIPAA compliance for healthcare?**

TextBolt can be configured for HIPAA-aware messaging — contact support for healthcare-specific setup and BAA details. As a rule, never put PHI in the body of a plain SMS regardless of vendor.

**Can I send a text to an email address?**

Yes. From your phone’s messaging app, start a new message and type the full email address in the **To** field instead of a phone number; the recipient gets it as an email. For business or automated texting, use a 10DLC service like TextBolt (`1234567890@sendemailtotext.com`) so messages are tracked and compliant.

**Why is my txt.att.net / mms.att.net not working?**

Because AT&T switched the gateway off on June 17, 2025. It’s not a phone glitch — restarting won’t fix it. Any system still sending there needs to move to a working sender such as `@sendemailtotext.com`.

**Is mms.att.net safe?**

`@mms.att.net` was a legitimate official AT&T gateway, so the domain itself was never harmful. But it’s now discontinued (so it simply fails), and SMS/MMS are unencrypted — never send passwords, banking details, or PHI over plain text. Use a compliant 10DLC sender for business messages.

**What replaced @txt.att.net?**

For business and automated texting, a registered 10DLC sender. TextBolt is a drop-in replacement: change `@txt.att.net` to `@sendemailtotext.com` and your existing email workflow keeps working on every carrier.

**What’s the SMS character limit?**

A single SMS segment is **155 characters**. Longer messages are split into multiple segments and reassembled on the recipient’s phone.
